What is RSS?

So you want to know what RSS is?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and with that functionality you can subscribe to several so called feeds of a website. A feed is an update that is sent to a software called news-reader in which you can manage all the updates on the webpages you are watching. That has the advantage that you do not have to revisit the webpage over and over again to see if there is something new but to have all the topics of your interest in one aggregated place. Therefore the software or web-service which you use is often called a (news-)aggregator. On a technical point of view RSS is formatted through a language called XML (eXtensible Markup Language).

As I personally use the Google Reader I suggest also using a web-based news-reader as it gives you the freedom to access your feeds on any computer with an internet browser. Of course this is only me personal choice, if you prefer to use a standalone software. Simply feed  your favorite search engine with the keywords standalone news reader.

Although blogs like this one have started the whole “syndication thing” there is more to it than only weblogs.
